FTM Student Ambassador
Help bring independent investigative journalism to your university.
Follow the Money is looking for students across Europe to join our first Student Ambassador programme.
As an FTM Student Ambassador, you’ll help introduce our journalism and free student membership to your university community. How you do that will partly be up to you. You might work with a student society, get FTM into a university newsletter, create digital content about our investigations, connect with relevant faculties, departments, and university staff, put up posters, or spot opportunities for FTM to join a campus event.
We’re looking for 2–3 students at selected universities across Europe for an initial semester-long programme.
What you’ll do
You’ll help us:
Find creative ways to introduce FTM and our free student membership to students across different disciplines, and encourage as many relevant students as possible to sign up.
Go beyond the sign-up: help students discover the newsletters, topics and journalists relevant to them, and show how FTM can support their studies, research, future work, and understanding of the issues they care about.
Build connections on campus with student societies, media, university staff, faculties, departments, and other relevant networks.
Spot opportunities for FTM to show up, from events and debates to fairs, newsletters and other campus spaces.
Bring FTM to life on and offline: share investigations and create content for student WhatsApp groups, society channels, TikTok, Instagram and other student spaces, alongside posters and FTM materials. Standout content may also be featured on FTM EU’s channels, such as Tiktok*
Experiment with your own ideas. FTM rarely thinks inside the box, and neither will you. You know your university better than we do.
You’ll have room to shape your approach rather than follow a fixed playbook. We’ll give you the toolkit, guidance and ideas to get started, plus regular opportunities to meet other ambassadors across Europe, swap what’s working, and collaborate across universities and countries.
What you’ll get
This is a voluntary, unremunerated role designed to give you practical experience with an award-winning, international investigative newsroom producing impactful journalism across Europe, alongside your studies.
You’ll get:
Hands-on experience in outreach, communications, and audience engagement, with the chance to help bring independent journalism that holds power to account to students and young people
Regular check-ins with the FTM team and opportunities to learn more about how FTM works
The chance to meet and collaborate with other Student Ambassadors from universities across Europe
A certificate recognising your participation at the end of the programme
Participants may also be able to request a reference based on their contribution to the programme.
Who we’re looking for
You need to be currently enrolled at a university or other higher-education institution – but you don’t need to study journalism!
You might be studying politics, law, economics, European studies, media, business, or something completely different. What matters more is that you’re curious about our mission (holding power to account), interested in investigative journalism, and comfortable getting other students involved.
You do need to be currently enrolled at a university or other higher-education institution, with ideally at least one semester completed.
And you’ll ideally:
Know your university and student community well
Have ideas about how to reach other students
Be comfortable reaching out to student societies, organisations, or fellow students
Be reliable, proactive, and able to work independently
Be comfortable communicating with the FTM team in English
Experience with events, social media, student organisations or communications is useful, but not required. You also don’t need to already be an expert, but willing to learn about our journalistic mission.
Practicalities
The programme will run for approximately three months, starting in the first week of October and ending by the end of December 2026.
Expect 4 hours per week, depending on what you’re working on, plus an online FTM team check-in of roughly 1.5 hours every two weeks.
The role is voluntary and designed to fit alongside your studies and other commitments. This is a voluntary opportunity, rather than a job or internship. While we’d love for you to stay connected with FTM, taking part doesn’t guarantee a future role with us.
How to apply
We want to hear what you would do with the role.
As part of your application, tell us in a maximum of 300 words how you would introduce FTM at your university. Who would you target, how and when would you reach them, and how would you encourage as many students as possible to sign up for a free trial and show them that FTM can help them get smarter and support their studies? Give us a sense of the ideas and approach you’d use over your first few months.
We’d also love to hear what interests you about volunteering for FTM, how you think it could support your journey, and which parts of our journalism you think would resonate most with students at your university.
